As the name suggests, Highton is located in the Barrabool Hills, west of the city of Geelong.
The Barwon River winds around the northern and eastern boundaries of Highton, while the Princes Highway skirts the western side.
However Highton was not named for its altitude, but rather for the grazier John Highett, who had property in the area. Montpellier Park is the site of the original property.
A township developed in the area, and soon boasted a population for 300 people, and vineyards and orchards flourished.
Farms became residential areas in the 1950s. Residents enjoyed the views from the hills.
Development is still happening in Highton, and the population is approximately 18,000 people.
Highton Primary School was the first school, dating back all the way to 1854.
The post-war growth brought two more primary schools in the 1960s, and Christian College is an independent primary/secondary school which opened in 1980.
The Deakin University Waurn Ponds Campus is in the next suburb.
In Highton’s north, tucked into a curve in the Barwon River, is Queens Park, where we find the Queens Park Golf Club, along with cricket, football, and netball clubs.
